They keep the line guide tight; as it goes back and forth when winding. One is a Zebco 202, that I don't plan on using, the other is a Daiwa spinning rod/reel combo listed in the subject line. Their advice was to use the same set ups for all of our rods and reels. Actually the reel still works, but the line is balled up in one spot on the spool.
